Impact of population increase
- Boom in the cloth industry and price of food rose
-Pressure on land led to increased rents but wages fell

homelessness- increased in response to problems in the countryside such as enclosure

1547- any able bodied person out of work for more than 3 days was to be branded with a V and sold into slavery for 2yrs- unpopular and never put into effect

1552- parishes had to raise money to look after the deserving poor
What is enclosure
-Process where landowners put small areas of land into one big farm
-Using new farming techniques- made farms more profitable and productive
The problem of enclosure
-Sheep farming was becoming more popular
- Due to higher food prices some landowners began to enclose land
-Thus damaging the livelihood of small scale and subsistence farmers
Somersets enclosure commision
1548- legality of enclosure in the Midlands adn southern England - found that enclosed lands had led to poverty and vagabondage
-Enclosure was promoted by too much sheep farming
Outcome of Somersts commision
- High hopes among ordinary people
-Fear among the landowning classes that their livelihoods were under attack
1548- billls to restrict animal farming amd maintain amount od land-FAILED - NEW LAW- tax sheep and cloth- repealed a year later
