Was set up in 1944. The aim was to improve standards in design through training, assessment and information. Also to improve the countries competitiveness
Why was tubular steel used as a replacement for wood post WW1?
Tubular steel dosen’t suffer from the problem of inconsistent strength
What did the utility furniture scheme include?
- Design was strongly influenced by the arts and craft movement - strong, simple and for purpose
- Prioritised helping newly married couples and people made homeless due to bombing

Polymer gave the design world momentum with bright colours and shapes
