Sociological questions
How does social change come about?
- from decay - from cycles of growth and decay - from progress
Reductionist
Someone who believes a single factor was at work, meaning that cause can be reduced to a specific factor
Determinist
Meaning that a specific factor will determine the nature of social change that takes place.

Patriarchy
Place historically designed for the convenience of men. Structured according to rules that men find comfortable. Women are largely excluded
Direction of Change
Is it positive or negative change and who says so?
Rate of Change
Is the degree of Change slow, moderate or fast?
Is it over a short period or decades?

Coming from another society into this one
Endogenous influences
Coming from within the society itself

Argument that when one part of the social system changes, tension arises between the part and the rest

Growth of human knowledge from generation to generation
Diffusion of Innovations
A new development (innovation) emerges in society.
2 things can affect the diffusion: who adopts it and who speaks in it’s favour
Pluralistic societies
Societies in which minorities maintain their cultural traditions
Elite groups
Skilled and educated people who have access to developmental funds, and who are in a position of influence
Capitalism
Economic system dependent on private investment and profit making
Core
Centre of an international change
Periphery
Regions that are far from the capital
Semi periphery
Includes nations such as Mexico and Brazil
Eventually these countries developed enough capitalistic function to become reclassified
Private sphere
Certain sector of societal life in which an individual enjoys a degree of authority, unhampered by interventions from governmental or other institutions
Discourse
Topics and ways of exchanging information about them that are used by groups of people with common interests
Textual discourse
Things like written words, movie roles, paintings and photographs
