Sociology Flashcards
(30 cards)
What does Parsons claim?
He claims that there is a clear division of labour between partners.
In usual cases, the husband seems to have an instrumental role, working and providing for the family while the wife has an expressive role, geared towards the socialisation of children.
What does Parson argue about this division of labour?
He claims that division of labour is based on biological differences with the women naturally suited for nurturing.
What are the two different conjugal roles, as claimed by Elizabeth Bott?
Segregated Conjugal Roles - The couple have separate roles. A male breadwinner and a female homemaker.
Joint conjugal roles- Where the couple share tasks such as housework.
What pattern did Young and Wilmott identify in segregated conjugal roles?
They found out that in WC families, the men was usually the breadwinner, playing little part in housework and caring for the children.
Who argues that families have a ‘March of Progress’, moving towards a more democratical system? “Symmetrical Family”
Young and Wilmott.
What couples have the chance of being in a symmetrical family more according to Young and Wilmott?
Young couples
What stance do feminists have towards the ‘March of progress view?
Feminists reject this view. They argue that little has changed and men and women remain unequal.
What does Ann Oakley claim?
She criticises Young and Wilmott’s view that the family is now symmetrical. She argues that their claims are exaggerated. Her research on housewives suggests that husbands do not participate in housework.
What did Warde and Hetherington find out?
They found a slight change of attitude in young men, but also found out that couples still did the ‘traditional tasks’.
What did Gershuny claim?
He claimed that more women working full-time jobs led to a more equal division of labour.
What does Oriel Sullivan claim?
He found a trend towards women doing a smaller share of domestic work and men doing more.
What did the Bitish Social Attitudes Survey show?
It shows that men were taking domestic works that were more ‘pleasing’ or fun such as taking care of children. Graham Allan argues that women’s asks such as washing or cleaning are less satisfying.
What did Boulton find out?
She points out that although fathers might help with housework it is usually the mother who takes care of the children.
What did Ferri and Smith found out based on Boulton’s reseach?
They found that fathers took responsibility for childcare in fewer of %4 families.
What did Dex and Ward found, backing Boulton’s research?
Althought fathers had high levels of involvement with their three year old, they did not take care of them if they were sick.
What does Arlie Hoschild claim?
That women have the ‘triple shift’ of housework, paid work and emotion work, causing tension among families and stress for the women.
What does Dale Southerton claim?
He claims that managing, coordinating and scheduling the family’s quality time falls on the mother.
What did Crompton and Lyonette argue?
They said that there are two different types of unequal division of labour.
The cultural explanation- The division of labour is determined by the patriarchal norms.
The material explanation- The fact that women generally earn less then men means it is economically rational for the women to do more housework.
What is patriarchy?
A society where the men are dominant and the women are oppressed.
What did Elaine Kempson find?
That working class women usually deny their own needs for their family.
What did Man Yee Kan find out?
Younger men do more domestic work.
What did Gillian Dunne find out?
Lesbian couples had more symmetrical relationships.
What does Michelle Barrett and Mary McInosh claim?
- Men gain far more from women’s domestic work than they give back in financial support.
- Financial support that husbands give to their wives is often unpredictable.
- Men usually make the decisions.
What did Vogler and Pahl find out?
They found out that men tended to make more important decisions such as financial management.
