Inequality of opportunity
When people don’t get the same chances to do well
Define Inequality
A situation in which some people have more wealth, better opportunities and may be seen as more important than others.
Inequality of outcome
When people don’t appear in social institutions in the same proportion as they appear in the general population.
Wealth
Some people have more money than others and can buy stuff that others cannot afford
Power and status
Certain groups are more respectful and have more political influence that can affect people’s lives
Life chances
The opportunities that a person has to obtain the things seen as desirable and avoiding the things thought of as undesirable in society
Examples of inequality
Jobs
Education
Elite
A small group or class of people who are superior in some ways E.g in terms of wealth and power
Prejudice
An idea about what someone is like based on ideas we already have about their social group
Discrimination
An action for or against someone because of a prejudice we hold
Racism
The view that some races are better than others.
Sexism
The view that one sex (usually male) is better than the other
Ageism
The view that certain ages are worse than others
Cultural misunderstanding
Not understanding another persons culture and seeing them in a negative, confused way.
Stereotypes
Exaggerated, simplified ideas about different groups
Socialisations
You might be taught it is fine to hate other groups and think it is ok to scapegoat (blame) those groups for things.
Status
How important/ respected your position is in society
Ascribed status
The status given to you at birth because of the social group you’re born into
Achieved status
The status you develop as a result of the things you do in life
Prestige
How special or important a role or position is seen by others within society
Glass ceiling
The invisible barrier between roles that men and women have
Social construction of gender
Is the idea that the norms of gender vary from society to society over time
Double burden
Is when women are expected to go out to do paid jobs and be in charge of the home and children
Triple shift
Is when women have to do paid work, housework and take care of emotional problems in the house
