What are the Ottawa ankle rules required in order to order an ankle x-ray series?

A

a) An ankle x-ray series is only required if
there is any pain in malleolar zone and any of these findings:
1. bone tenderness at the posterior edge or tip of lateral malleolus
OR
2. bone tenderness at posterior edge or tip of medial malleolus
OR
3. inability to bear weight both immediately and in ED

OR

How do you heal it?

A

Frequent injury in football players
MP joint injury of the great toe - hurts when you move it

Rest is what is going to help it heal

What does RICE stand for?

A

Rest ice pressure elevation

What is Morton’s neuroma?

How should it be treated?

A

Often caused by shoe with a narrow toe box - irritates the nerve, often between 3rrd and 4th toes (can be any toes)

Treat with better toebox shoes
Test with compression

People say that their heel is hurting on the medial side, what is the diagnosis?

A

plantar fasciitis

How can you heal plantar fasciitis?

A

heel cup to put heel slightly up and rest it by keeping the pressure off

You want to stretch the calf and foot arch to relieve some pain (especially before getting out of bed)

What is a syndesmotic sprain?

A

High ankle sprain of the syndesmotic ligaments that connect the tibia and fibula on the lower leg

causation: forced dorsiflexion (ex. Soccer player stepping in a hole)

What is a likely diagnosis if a patient presents with inflammation of the medial knee?

A

Pes Anserine bursitis

could be injury to the region or an overuse problem

What is the O’Donoghue triad?

A

A classic tear in football

MCL, ACL, and Medial Meniscus tear

In knee sprains, what is an important question to ask when gauging the severity?

A

How fast did the swelling take to occur?

Faster = more serious

If a roofer comes in complaining of knee pain and the swelling is isolated across the anterior portion of the patella, what would you say is going on here?

A

Prepatellar bursitis

Tell the roofer to wear some durn knee pads

What is patellofemoral syndrome? Who does it affect the most?

A

Pain that seems to originate from contact of the posterior surface of the patella with the femur

Happens a lot to female athletes, especially runners

If someone comes in complaining of hip pain and pointing to the lateral side of their upper leg, what is likely the diagnosis?

A

Not hip pain, which would be felt in the groin.

Most likely it is trochanteric bursitis
