soil formation Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
CLIMATE
A
rainfall and temperature can effect soil formation.
In cold areas freeze thaw action can form thin soil,
In hot areas chemical weathering breaks down soils to form deep soils.
2
Q
PARENT ROCK
A
rock type influences soil formation beacuse some rocks erode faster,
soil can take longer to form in areas of hard rock
3
Q
RELIEF
A
soils in upland areas are thinner due to mass movement,
they are poorly drained and receive heavy rainfall
4
Q
TIME
A
it can take around 400 years for 1cm of soil to form because the process is so slow
5
Q
HUMAN ACTIVITY
A
ploughing, irrigation and fertilisers can make soil more fertile
