APPLICATIONS OF FLAT PLATE COLLECTOR

A
  1. Water heating systems for hotels, residences and in industry.
  2. Desalination plant for obtaining drinking water from seawater.
  3. Solar cooker for domestic use.

Q

THE ADVANTAGES OF THE FLAT-PLATE
COLLECTORS

A
    1. Easy to manufacture.
    1. Low cost.
    1. Collect both beam and diffuse radiation.
    1. Permanently fixed (no sophisticated positioning or tracking
      equipment is required).
    1. Requires little maintenance.

11
Q

THE PRINCIPAL DISADVANTAGES OF A FLAT PLATE
COLLECTOR

A

The area from which heat is lost is large.

High temperatures cannot be attained and as a result the collection
efficiency is generally low

The radiation absorbed in the absorber plate is lost by convection

Q

Used in applications that
require temperatures between 100ºC and 250ºC. type of solar collectors are used for this type of solar thermal energy: The
Evacuated tube collector (ETC) consists of several rows of parallel
transparent glass tubes connected to a header pipe. What is it?

A

MEDIUM TEMPERATURE COLLECTOR

13
Q

What are the mechanisms of medium collectors

A

Multiple evacuated glass tubes with solar
absorbers collect heat energy from the sun

The absorber inside vacuum tube absorbs radiation
from the sun and heats fluid inside the copper
pipe

Effective whatever the angle of the sun - even on
a cloudy day

Q

THE ADVANTAGES OF THE EVACUATED TUBE
COLLECTOR

A
  • 1-Achieves a high efficiency with large temperatures.
  • 2- low weight .
  • 3- Can be used in sub zero temperatures.
  • 4- works in cold, windy and humid conditions.

16
Q

THE DISADVANTAGES OF THE EVACUATED TUBE
COLLECTOR

A
  • 1- not easily integrated into the fabric of the building ( e.g. roof
    or facade integrated ).
  • 2- higher cost.
  • 3- less robust.
17
Q

is the technique
to generate electrical energy through solar radiation.
The production of electrical energy is carried out in
solar thermal power plants that use solar collectors to
concentrate solar radiation at one point.
Using this concentration technique, temperatures above
500 degrees Celsius is achieved, and these are used to
produce steam. What is it?

A

HIGH TEMPERATURE

18
Q

THE TECHNOLOGIES USED IN HIGH TEMP TYPE OF
FACILITY ARE

A

1- Parabolic trough solar collectors : solar
concentrating is used in applications where it is
desirable to reach temperatures higher than
achieved with flat plate collectors.
2- solar Tower plants: This solar thermal energy system is based on
the concentration of solar radiation towards a point on a tower. It is also
known as a central receiver system.
Tower systems are made up of a field of heliostats (2-axis mobile mirrors).
Heliostats capture and concentrate solar radiation on a receiver, installed on
top of a central tower.
