Solar System Flashcards
(22 cards)
What is a solar system
The sun, eight planets and their moons, dwarf planets, and other objects that revolve around the sun
What is orbit
Orbit is the path of any object in space that revolves around another object in space
What is a planet?
A planet is a large, ball shaped body that revolves, or travels, around the sun.A planet is a large body of matter.
What is an asteroid?
An asteroid is a small chunk of rock that orbits the sun.
Name the inner planets
Mercury, Venus, Earth, and mars
Name the outer planets
The five outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto
How do the sizes of the four inner planets compare
Mercury is the smallest, Venus is larger than mercury and smaller than earth. Mars is half the size of earth
What makes life on earth possible
Earth is the only planet that can support life. Earth has mild temperatures, water, and atmosphere that living things need.It also provides energy for plants to grow.
In what way are Jupiter and Saturn alike
Jupiter and Saturn are the two gas giants
Which of the outer planets is not a gas giant
Pluto is the only outer planet that is not a gas giants
What is Pluto considered
Pluto, is a dwarf planets
Is Uranus and Neptune smaller than Jupiter and Saturn?
Yes
Why is the sun so bright and hot
The sun is so bright and hot because it is a star made of hot, burning gases.
Why does the sun look brighter and larger
The sun looks larger and brighter because it is close to Earth
How do you objects in the solar system move
Objects in the solar system move by the orbit. In orbit is an oval shaped path around the sun. Planets that are closer to the sun have a shorter orbit. The strong pull of gravity holds the planets in their orbit.
What is the temperature of the sun
The temperature of the sun surface is 5500°C
What do all gas giants have?
Rings
Which is the only planet that supports many living things
Earth
Which object has an unusual orbit and is called a dwarf planet?
Pluto
Why is Mars called the red planet?
Mars is called the red planet because it has a orange reddish surface
Explain why some stars seems so much brighter in the night
Because some stars are closer to earth but other stars are far away from earth. The stars that are closer to earth will appear brighter than the ones that are further away.
Explain how energy is released from the sun
The temperature of the sun surface is 5500°C.The center is millions of degrees hot. It’s so hot that gas particles that have a positive energy collide and join. This release is a lot of energy. Energy that travels from the sun through space include sunlight.🌞
