Solder Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is solder made out of?
Tin and Lead
What is the ratia between solder used in our class?
60% tin, 40% lead (60/40 solder
Why is flux used for soldering ?
Give three reasons
- Allows solder to flow
-cleans connections
-prevents metal corrosion during heating
What is tinning?
Tinning is the process of applying a thin layer of solder to another metal surface
When is tinning needed in class?
Soldering Iron Tips
Foil Patterns
The Soldering Process
- All surfaces must be clean
-Heat all surfaces simultaneously to a temperature that will melt solder
-Enough solder should be added so that the entire connection has an even amount
-Solder is always added to the opposite side of the connection that the heat is in
-the solder wire is removed first and then the soldering iron a few seconds later
What does a proper solder connections look like?
SMOOTH
SHINY
COVERS THE CONNECTION
what causes cold solder joints
1 removing heat too soon
2.the connectiin is moved before the solder is cooled / hardened
