Solubility Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
Effect of temperature on the solubility of gases
A
Gases increase in solubility as partial pressure increases
2
Q
Effect of temperature on solubility
A
- Most substances dissolve more quickly at higher temperatures, but that does not necessarily mean that they are more soluble
- Most gases are less soluble in warm water than cold water
- Solids show a more varied behavior, hard to predict
3
Q
What are Q and Ksp?
A
- Ksp describes equilibrium concentrations
- Q describes concentrations at any point
4
Q
When is the solution saturated, unsaturated, and supersaturated?
A
Q=Ksp, the solution is saturated and at equilibrium (no net change)
Q>Ksp, the solution is supersaturated, and ionic solid will precipitate
Q<Ksp, the solution is unsaturated and more of the ionic solid will dissolve
5
Q
What is the unit for molar solubility?
A
M (mol/L)
