Solubility Flashcards
(7 cards)
What are insoluble salts?
Also known as sparingly soluble salts, these salts dissociate less than 100% in water (there is still solid present). The solid salt is at equilibrium with its ions.
Are compounds with a higher Ksp more soluble?
Yes
What is molar solubility of a compound?
The maximum concentration that can be dissolved
How do ions affect affect solubility?
The number of ions greatly affects how solubility is determined, Ksp can be used to determine solubility for two salts ONLY if the number of ions in each salt are the same
What does a large Ksp mean?
Reaction proceeds in the forward direction (product favoured), solution is not saturated and no precipitation is observed. THIS MEANS MORE SOLUBLE SALT.
What does a small Ksp mean?
Reaction proceeds in the reverse direction (reactants favoured), solution is supersaturated and a precipitation will occur. THIS MEANS LESS SOLUBLE SALT.
How does temperature affect solubility?
Increase in temperature results in an increase in Ksp, thus an increase in solubility
