Solubility Terms Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is a solute?
A substance that is dissolved in a solution.
What is a solvent?
A substance in which other materials dissolve to form a solution.
What is a solution?
A homogeneous mixture of one or more solutes dissolved in a solvent.
What is solubility?
The degree to which a substance dissolves in a solvent.
What does saturated mean?
A state in which one substance takes up as much space as possible within another substance.
What does unsaturated mean?
A state in which one substance is capable of absorbing or dissolving more of something.
What is supersaturated?
When the amount of solute per volume of solution exceeds its minimum theoretical concentration.
What does concentrated mean?
One that has a relatively large amount of dissolved solute.
What does dilute mean?
Has a relatively small amount of dissolved solute.
What is miscible?
The property of two substances to mix in all proportions, forming a homogeneous mixture.
What is immiscible?
Not forming a homogeneous mixture when added together.
What does soluble mean?
Able to be dissolved, especially in water.
What does insoluble mean?
Incapable of being dissolved.
What is solvation?
The process where solvent molecules surround and interact with solute molecules or ions, leading to the formation of a stable solution.
