Agaisnt free childcare
Free childcare might not be the best option for several reasons. First of all, it won’t change the fact that women are over represented in low paying and part time jobs
Against free childcare BK
Because of this, free childcare alone won’t fix the gap, or get women into higher paying jobs. (BK)

° Second of all, there’s not enough childminders for free childcare to be available for every struggling household with children.
° “In the six months up to March 2021, there was a 4.4% net loss of childcare providers and 1.1% net loss of childcare places, driven mostly by childminders leaving the sector.”
° this proves that in theory this would be a nice solution, but realistically it’s impossible if there’s more kids that need taking care of than the number of child minders.

° Third point is that women don’t only have to take care of their children. They might have caring responsibilities for other people in the house such as elderly family members. These are called sandwich carers.
° ““There are 1.25 million sandwich carers in the Uk. These are people caring for an older relative as well as bringing up a family. 68% (850,743) are women.”
°this shows that there are than half of the amount of sandwich carers in the UK are women. Many of these women will have to take time off of work to provide these caring responsibilities, which means they won’t be able to progress to higher paying careers, and are stuck in a cycle of struggle and inequality.

° Free childcare up to the end of primary school can significantly reduce gender inequality against women, as this would allow mums (mainly single mums) to continue with their jobs, and aim for things they otherwise wouldn’t be able to
° “Accessible and available school age childcare, even when paid for, could have a particular positive impact for all women with childcare responsibilities for school age children, whatever their income, working hours or family circumstances, enabling them to take on roles which had previously been out of reach or to increase hours worked.”
° this shows with free childcare, mothers would be less pressured to work part time or leave their jobs entirely, allowing them to take on full time roles and career advancement.

° “A targeted funded school age childcare system with food provision is very likely to reduce household costs and reduce food insecurity for single mothers and open up the potential to increase household income.”
° This shows that women will need to spend less money from the low paid jobs they’re in, and will be able to save up, or focus on necessities that need to be paid for to live comfortably.
