solutions and mixtures Flashcards
this deck will be used for only when i have a test (21 cards)
what is a solubility curve
how a solute will dissolve in a different solvent at different temperatures the solubility of the solute is shown in grams per 100 cm cubed
what is a chemical change
when atoms rearrange to create new substances called products. they are usually irreversible and involve energy changes there are 2 types. there can also be a colour change as well as new products are forming
what is a product
a substance that you are left with after a chemical reaction
what are the 2 types of energy changes
exothermic and endothermic
what is a physical change
a change in state instead of forming new substances. these type of changes are usually reversible and less energy is needed. there is no colour change. (e.g of a physical change) ice melting
what are the original chemicals called in a chemical change
reactants
what are some types of physical change
texture shape and temperature
what is an element
a pure substance of only one atom
what is a mixture
a mixture is a combination of 2 or more substances that are not chemically bonded
what is a compound
a compound is a combination of 2 or more substances that are chemically bonded
compound properties
the properties for a compound is different from when the elements were singular
example of a mixture
stones and rice
example of a compound
water or salt
what is a solute
a solute is a substance that dissolves in the solvent e.g sugar and tea (the sugar is the solute)
what is a solvent
a solvent is the liquid that dissolves the solute e.g flour and water (water is the solvent)
what is the dissolving process
when solute particles separate and spread around the solvent particles
what is Centrifugation
separates substances based on their density using rapid spinning
what is Chromatography
separates substances by their movement by a medium( mobile and stationary substance)
what is a dependant variable
a factor that is measured or observed in response to changes in the independent variable
what is a independent variable
the independent variable is the factor that is deliberately change or manipulated by the researcher. it is the presumes cause in a cause and effect relationship.
what is a cause and effect relationship
the relationship between two events or situations when one of the two is the cause of the other. The cause is the event or situation that triggers or creates the effect.
