medical conditions characterized by chronic or recurrent physical symptoms that cannot be explained by known med conditions

excessive anxiety + preoccupation w/ >1 unexplained symptom
ex. recurrent abdo pain, headache

fear of having a serious illness despite few or no symptoms and consistently negatively ix

often acute onset and associated with stress

intentional falsification of symptoms to assume sick role

intentionally faking illness for secondary gain/external incentives
examples of stress related medical illnesses
- cardio: HTN, arrhythmias
- GI: IBS and ulcers
- MSK: muscle pain + TMJ
- mental health: depression, anxiety, PTSD, mood
- reprod: menstrual irregularities and sexual dysfunction
- skin: eczema, acne
- MS
how to tx somatic disorders?
- reassurance to pt
- therapy ➔ CBT
- tx comorbid psychiatric conditions
what is a trauma informed approach for interviewing?
- background - what is going on in your life rn?
- affect - how does that make you feel?
- trouble - what is the most difficult part of the situation?
- Handling: how are you managing this?
- empathy: this must be very challenging
