What is alliteration
The occurrence of the same sound at the beginning of closely connected words
What is Assonance
The repetition of vowel sounds in a series of words eg Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers
What is sibilance
When a hissing sound is created within a group of words through the repetition of ‘s’ sounds. Eg Sarah’s silly sister swallowed her sweet
Can also be sounds from F, sh, th, Z and V
What is onomatopoeia
When word’s sound directly links to its meaning eg sizzle - the sizzle of bacon on the griddle is music to my ears
What is consonance
The recurrence of similar sounding consonants in close proximity eg Mike likes his new bike
What is plosives
A consonant that is produced by stopping the airflow using lips teeth or palate followed by a sudden release of air eg p as in pat, m as in mat, b as in bat, t as in tat, g as in gut, d as in duck
What is Fricatives
A consonant sound produced by bringing the mouth into position to block the passage of the airstream but not making complete closure so that air moving through the mouth generates friction eg f, s, v z
