Sound Flashcards
(11 cards)
Sound needs a medium
Put an alarm or buzzer into a bell jar and connect it to a vacuum pump.as air is removed, the sound becomes fainter. Conclusion: sound needs a medium in which to travel.
Sound
Is a form of energy.it is produced by vibrations (vocal chords, air molecules, ear drums) sound can travel through a solid, a liquid,or a gas. It cannot travel through a vacuum therefore it needs a medium to travel through.
Speed of sound and air
The speed of sound in air is 340 m/s light is 3x10(to the power of 8) m/s. This is why we see lightening before we hear the thunder even though they happen at the same time.
Echoes
Is a reflection of sound
Ultrasound
Sound above our hearing
Ear protection
If people are working in a job where sound is above 70db (decibels) they have to wear ear protection (busy street protection)
Permanent ear damage
Sounds above 115 db
Energy conversion in hearing
The movement, energy is converted to electrical energy and goes to the brain to be processed
Loudness
Of a sound is called he sound intensity level
Sound intensity
Is measured in db (decibels)
A sound level meter
Is used to measure the loudness of a sound in decibels
