sound and light Haleigh miller Flashcards
(35 cards)
What is a pitch?
How high or low a sound is, depends on frequency of a sound wave
What is a sound wave?
A longitudinal wave, that’s is caused by a sound wave and travels through a medium.
What is infrasound?
Slow vibrations or frequencies lower than 20 hertz
What is ultrasound?
A sound wave with frequencies above 20 hertz
What is resonance?
An occurrence that happens when two object naturally vibrate at the same frequency.
What is intensity?
The rate energy flows through an area
What is decibel?
Unit that intensity is measured in.
What is fundamental frequency?
The frequency of an objects vibrations.
What are harmonics?
They give every instrument a unique sound
What is sonar?
Uses acoustic signals to find a location or to communicate
What is Basilar Membrane?
In the cochlea and its a long flexible membrane. Different parts of the basilar membrane vibrate at different natural frequencies. When waves pass through the cochlea they resonate with specific parts of the basilar membrane.
What is photon?
Unit or quantum of light
What is intensity?
Where energy flows through an area
What is radar?
Determines the velocity and location of objects?
What is Electromagnetic Spectrum?
Light at all possible values of energy frequency and wavelength.
What is light Ray?
A line in space that matches the direction of the flow of radiant energy.
What is Virtual image?
An image that forms at a location from which light rays appear to come but do not actually come.
What is real image?
An image of an object formed by light rays that come together at a specific location.
What is diffuse reflection?
Reflection of light into random directions
What is geometrical optics?
The study of light in cases in which light behaves like Ray.
Angle of reflection
The angle of light rays is reflecting off the surface
Angle of incidence
The angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection
Law of reflection
The angle of light rays striking the surface
Normal
The point where light hits the mirror
