Sound and Wave Interactions Flashcards
(10 cards)
What type of wave is sound?
A mechanical and longitudinal wave.
Why can’t sound travel in space?
There’s no medium (particles) for it to travel through.
In what medium does sound travel fastest?
Solids (because particles are closer together).
What are compressions and rarefactions?
compression - Areas of high pressure in a sound wave
rarefaction - Areas of low pressure in a sound wave.
What does pitch depend on?
Frequency of the wave.
What does loudness depend on?
Amplitude of the wave.
What frequency range can humans hear?
20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.
What is infrasound?
Sound below 20 Hz (too low for human hearing).
What is ultrasound?
Sound above 20,000 Hz (too high for human hearing).
How do animals use sound?
For detection (echolocation), navigation, and communication across wide ranges of frequency.
