Sources of Knowledge Flashcards
(22 cards)
Benefits of Tradition
Snowballing of knowledge, applicable in the sense of training
Drawback of Tradition
Anecdotal, single source or someone telling a story. Current evidence is questionable.
Benefits of Authority
Translatable and the person has trust (credentials)
Drawback of Authority
Variable between authority figures
Benefits of Trial and Error
Has evidence from the ones that work and don’t work.
Drawbacks of Trial and Error
Haphazard, lack of understanding
Benefits of Deductive and Inductive Reasoning
Systematic and applicable
Drawbacks of Deductive and Inductive Reasoning
Assumed Connections
Benefits of Scientific Research
Trust, evidence, systematic, ground in theory
Drawbacks of Scientific Research
Resource intensive, difficult to translate
Deduction
General Observation to Specific Conclusion (process of elimination)
Induction
Specific Observation to General Conclusion
Necessary
A is required to produce B. A alone might not be enough to produce B
Sufficient
A can produce B independently. Things other than A may also produce B.
Variable
Something measured or observed (BP, HR, isometric force), has units.
Construct
A useful “idea” represented by one or more variable(s). What the variables are trying to represent , ex, BP and HR represent cardiovascular health
Hypothesis
A prediction relating construct(s) and variable(s) to each other.
Theory
A systematic synopsis of interrelated constructs, variables, and propositions.
What is a model?
A simplified representation of a complicated phenomenon. Examples, action potentials and rigid link models.
Why is a model not a theory?
A model can combine multiple theories, can study parts of a theory and can have specific “instances”(oblique fibers can run different ways, need a model for each direction).
What is a law?
A description of natural phenomenon that allows predictions. Examples, Frank-Starling Law and Wolff’s Law.
Why is a Law not a theory?
A law has no explanation of why, it’s just how it is, it’s applicable to lots of other things. A law can’t use deduction to “grow”.
