Not effected by phloxxera. 1st area for vine plantings from German immigrants, “Jacob’s Creek”, Shiraz from 1843, Grenache from 1850, Block 42 from 1888
Characteristics of Barossa Valley Shiraz?
Intense flavors of chocolate, prune and date, wrapped in velvety tannins and emboldened by high, mentholated alcohol levels, often in excess of 15%
Differences in moderating factors between Barossa Valley vs Eden Valley
Barossa Valley- lower in elevation, 2-3 degrees warmer. Deep loamy clay soils, with an underground water reserve for irrigation.
Eden Valley - higher elevation, cooler, less planted, approx 1/5 under vine vs Barossa. Water scarcity. Red clay with granite outcrops.
Sparkling Shiraz winemaking
Known as “Sparkling Burgundy” locally, this wine goes back to 1888 with Edmund Mazure.
Base Shiraz is fermented to dryness and aged in oak prior to secondary fermentation in tank, dosage of Tawny port is added for some RS
Grapes grown in Barossa?
Shiraz - over 50%
Cab Sauv - 2nd most planted
Grenache, Mataro (Mouvedre)
Chard and Semillon
Characteristics of Eden Valley Shiraz?
More elegance, spice, and red fruit character. Most famous —Henschke’s eight-hectare Hill of Grace, planted in 1860—is the source of Australia’s top single vineyard wine, providing a site-specific counterpoint to the philosophy behind “Grange.”
Eden Valley Riesling characteristics?
25% of vineyard plantings. Of German heritage, it is classically dry, sharply acidic, and dripping with lime flavor. Generally, the best examples of Riesling (and other white grapes) are produced in the cooler southern sectors of the GI

Found in town of Seppeltsfield, world-class “100 Year Old Para Liqueur”
Climate for McLaren Vale GI in the Fleurie Zone?
Warm Mediterranean, with substanial variation. Region III Winkler scale
Moderating factors to McLaren Vale GI?
Warm & windy, alleviates fungal pressures. Phylloxera free, organic & biodynamic farming. Drought is main concern, small amount dry farmed, most irrigation from recycled water from nearby Adelaide suburbs.
Mounty Lofty Ranges to the East & Gulf of St Vincent to west
Characteristics of McLaren Vale Shiraz?
Typically intense, with brooding tannins, high alcohol levels (14-15%) and deep blue fruits, but changing consumer tastes, some winemakers are starting to soften their touch, particularly in regards to the type and percentage of new oak used. French oak more vs American barrels in both Shiraz and CS. The mighty, massive chocolate & prune flavors common in many Barossa examples of Shiraz are less dominant here, more iron notes from soils of ironstone, or red sandstone
What is ‘Scarce Earth’?
A new project that seeks to recognizes differences in soil & geology sites for Shiraz in McLaren Vale. 24 wines from producers like d’Arenberg, Chapel Hill, and Gemtree. Released on 1st of May the year after the harvest.

Shiraz & Cab Sauv dominate.
Grenache - exciting, from Blewitt Springs & Kangarilla
