Sovereignty
Ability to control of what happen inside states borders
Realism POV
-Westphalian
- to control what happens at your borders without interference from others
Liberalism POV
Responsible sovereignty: control what happens inside your borders by respecting human rights.
Pooled: countries share aspects of their sovereign power within a supranational organization to achieve goals and increase influence.
Example of Pooled sovereignty
The European Union (EU) where member countries share authority allowing them to act unified in global matters.

-CONTRA: states can choose to join and leave IGOs
Most IGOs allow states the right to veto

Terrorist groups
-ARGU: terrorist challenge states sovereignty by attempting to redefine states borders and preventing the state to exercise supreme control inside its territory
-CONTRA: attempts by militant groups are seen as illegitimate and military actions is used to reaffirm sovereignty

-CONTRA: multinational corporation depend on the state

A state’s sovereignty is reinforced when it is recognized by other states, often influenced by economic relationships
Consent of the governed through political participation
-Lack of political participation can challenge a states sovereignty from within
-More consent = more internal sovereignty
