Space Flashcards
(17 cards)
Celestial body
Any naturally made object outside the Earths atmosphere e.g. stars, comets, moons and astroids.
Stars
A star is a celestial body that generates its own light and heat and consists
of a mass of gas held together by its own gravity
Planets
A planet is a celestial body that is in orbit around a star and has enough mass to
form an almost round shape due to its own gravity and have ‘cleared the region’
around its orbit of other celestial bodies.
Galaxy
A galaxy is a huge collection of billions of stars and their solar systems, all held
together by gravity.
Solar system
The solar system consists of the Sun and everything that orbits the Sun.
Moons
A natural satellite of a planet
Astronomy
Astronomy is the science that deals with the universe beyond Earth’s
atmosphere.

Asteroid
An asteroid is a small rocky body orbiting the Sun.
Comet
A comet is a dusty snowball which orbits the Sun.
The Big Bang Theory (formation of the universe)
• Before the big bang (14 billion years ago):
• The entire universe was smaller than a pinhead.
• It was extremely hot and dense.
• It then exploded creating time, space and matter.
• The universe expanded.
1st piece of evidence for the big bang
• In 1964, an energy called ‘cosmic background radiatio 2nd piece of evidence for the big bang
• Edwin Hubble and Vesto Slipher discovered that the universe is expanding.
