Space Flashcards
(34 cards)
Solar System-
The sun and itβs family of orbiting planets, moons, and other objects.
Galaxy-
Millions or billions of stars held together in a group by their own gravity.
Universe-
Space and all the matter and energy in it.
Satellite-
An object that orbits a massive object.
Impact crater-
A round out left behind on the surface of a planet or other body in space
Axis of rotation-
An imaginary line in which a turning body, such as Earth rotates.
Revolution-
The motion of one body around another, such as Earth in itβs orbit around the Sun;
Season-
One part of a pattern of temperature changes and other weather trends over the course of the year.
Equinox-
In an orbit, a position and time in which sunlight shines equally on the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere.
Solstice-
In an orbit, a position and time during which one hemisphere gets its maximum are of sunlight, while the other hemisphere gets its minimum amount.
Mare-
A large, dark plain of solidified lava on the moon.
Ellipse-
An oval or flattened circle.
Umbra-
The dark, central region of a shadow, such as the cone of complete shadow cast by an object.
Penumbra-
A region of lighted shadow that may surround an umbra;
Astronomical Unit (AU) -
Earths average distance from the sun, which is approximately 150 million kilometers (93 million mi.)
Eclipse-
An event during which one object in space casts a shadow onto another.
Terrestrial planet-
Earth or a planet similar to earth that has a rocky surface.
Gas giant-
A large planet that consists of gases in a dense form. The four largest planets in the solar system are gas giants.
Asteroid-
A small, solid, rocky body that orbits the sun.
Comet-
A body that produces a coma of gas and dust.
Meteor-
A brief streak of light produced by a small particle entering Earths atmosphere at high speed.
Meteorite-
A small object from outer space that passes through Earths atmosphere and reaches the surface.
Geocentric-
Having or representing the earth as a center.
Heliocentric-
Having or representing the sun as the center.
