Space Physics Flashcards
(13 cards)
what is SS made up of
8 planets
dwarf planets
moons (natural satellites)
asteroids
comets
where is SS located
milky way galaxy
HOW DOES STAR FORM
- cloud of dust and gas (nebula) pulled together by gravitational attraction
- forms protostar
- as star becomes denser, particles collide more often and so temp increases as more energy is transferred to thermal energy store
- when temp is high enough nuclear fusion begins
- becomes main sequence star
whats the main gas in a nebula
hydrogen
why is a star stable
because the fusion reactions produce outward forces which are in equilibrium to gravitational forces pulling it in
life cycle of stars: sunsized
protostar
main sequence star
red giant
white dwarf
black hole
life cycle of stars:
much larger than sun
protostar
main sequence
red supergiant
SUPERNOVA
neutron star/blackhole
as an object prbits what changes and what stays same
velocity constantly changes
speed stays same
whats the name of the resultant force on orbiting body
-where does it act towards
centripetal force
-acts towards bodyits orbiting
define red shift
name given to effect that makes wavelengths longer if light source moves away from observer
what observations suggest that universe is expanding
further away galaxies are, the moe their light is redshifted
what is dark energy
force responsible for acceleration of universe’s expansion
define big bang theory
theory for start of universe where universe began as a singularity
