Space Test Flashcards
(18 cards)
What are the order of the planets from the sun?
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto
What is a Terrestrial Planet?
A rocky planet made up of metals and silicates that has a solid surface.
What is a Jovan planet?
A planet with a large size, gashouse composition, primarily made of hydrogen and helium, with low density and lack of a solid surface.
How are distances measured in space?
Astronomical units are a useful measure for distances in our solar system, while light years are more practical for distances to the stars.
Kilometers/Astronomical Units/Light years/parsecs
1 Au= 150 Million km
1 ly= 63241.1 Au
1 Pc= 3.26 ly= 206165.9 Au
Life cycle of a star:
nebula, protostar, main sequence, red giant, planetary nebula and finally white dwarf, black dwarf or neutron star, or black hole
Spiral galaxy properties:
a thin disk composed of stars, gas, and dust; a central bulge of older stars; and a spherical halo of the oldest stars and massive star clusters
Elliptical galaxy properties:
Elliptical galaxies are spherical or oval-shaped collections of stars that are less common than spiral galaxies. They have little gas and dust, and are dominated by old stars.
Irregular Galaxy Properties:
rregular galaxies have no particular shape. They are among the smallest galaxies and are full of gas and dust.
How to identify a star based off its magnitude, color, and temp:
To identify a star based on its color, magnitude, and temperature, you can use the Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram, which plots a star’s luminosity (magnitude) against its surface temperature (represented by color), allowing you to pinpoint its specific type based on its position on the diagram; hotter stars appear blue, while cooler stars are red, with various shades of white and yellow in between.
Big bang Theory:
According to this theory the Universe expanded from an extremely small, extremely hot, and extremely dense state. Since then it has expanded and become less dense and cooler. The Big Bang is the best model used by astronomers to explain the creation of matter, space and time 13.7 billion years ago.
Steady state theory:
The “steady state theory” in cosmology proposes that the universe is constantly expanding but maintains a constant average density
Edwin Hubble’s observation of redshift:
Hubble’s brilliant observation was that the red shift of galaxies was directly proportional to the distance of the galaxy from earth. That meant that things farther away from Earth were moving away faster. In other words, the universe must be expanding.
Big Bang 3 evidence:
Redshift: AS the universe expands light wave move to the red side of the spectrum as they are stretched.
Abundance of lighter elements
Cosmic background radiation: Radiation left over from the big bang.
What is Parallax angle:
The apparent shift in the distance of an object when viewed from two different perspectives.
What elements are created in a supernova?
Elements that are denser than iron. These include zinc, silver, tin, gold, mercury, and uranium.
What is nuclear fusion?
Nuclear fusion is the process by which two light atomic nuclei combine to form a single heavier one while releasing massive amounts of energy.
What are the order of the HR classification of stars.
Oh be a fine girl, kiss me.
