Special Senses ear Flashcards
(15 cards)
Auricle (pinna)
directs sound into auditory canal, outer most part of ear
Auditory Canal
aka external acoustic meatus; short; narrow chamber that leads to ear drum
Tympanic Membrane
aka eardrum; separates outer ear from middle ear; transmit sound waves through vibration to ossicles
Ceruminous Glands
produce wax
Cerumen
wax; protects the middle ear by trapping debris from env.
Auditory Ossicles
middle ear bone
Auditory Ossicles - Malleus
hammer shaped; middle bone
Auditory Ossicles - Incus
anvil shaped; middle bone
Stapes
stirrup shaped; innermost
Eustachian Tubes
aka Auditory tube: helps equalize pressure within the ear by draining fluids from the middle ear to pharynx
Labyrith
controls balance and equilibrium
Cochlea
snail like structure of the inner ear; contains fluid that sound, vibration travels and is converted to electrical impulses
Organ of Corti
Structure within cochlea that converts sound waves
Semicircular Canals
tells your brain where your head is in space, maintains balance and spatial orientation
Vestibulocochlear
aka, auditory nerve; 2 nerves, hearing sensation and balance and equilibrium parts
