(12 cards)
What is a Nose ?
A nose is an organ that has nasal cavities that is separated by nasal septum.
How many concha does the nose have ?
3 concha
- Inferior nasal concha
- Middle nasal concha
- Superior nasal concha
What is the functions of concha ?
- Increases surface
2. The surface maximises warming, humidification and filtering
How many sinuses does the nose have ?
- Maxillary sinuses
- Sphenoid sinuses
- Frontal sinuses
- Ethmoidal sinuses
What lines the nasal cavities ?
Mucous membranes with many blood vessels for heat and moisture
What cells secretes mucous in nasal cavities ?
Goblet cells
What is the term for Sense of Smell ?
Olfaction
What is Olfaction ?
- chemoreceptors in mucous membrane of roof of nasal cavity
- olfactory receptor Enron’s sends impulse via cranial nerve 1
Describe the Physiology of Smell
- odours dissolves into mucous-coated interior and stimulates olfactory chemoreceptors
- air entering nose is warmed and taken to roof of nasal cavity
- olfactory receptors are stimulated thus perception of smell
What is the term for Sense of Taste ?
Gustation
What is Gustation ?
- involves stimulation of chemoreceptors by dissolved chemicals
- closely linked to sense of smell
- papillae aids in sense of taste
- increases salivation and secretion of gastric juice
- has protective function
- sense of taste is impaired when mouth is dry
What is spicy food translated to on the Papillae ?
- sensed as pain/heat
- tongue will sense capsaicin, pain signal is sent to brain
- frequent eating, sense is less
