Species Diversity Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is birth rate?
Species natural ability to reproduce
What is the death rate?
How many of a species are dying
What are r-selected species?
• respond quickly to low survival rates
• reach sexual maturity quickly
• produce many young
E.g. mice and greenfly
What are k-selected species?
• recover slowly from decline in population
• reach sexual maturity older
• produce less young but live a long time
What are density independent factors?
Factors where population density has no effect
—> drought, flood, eruption
What are density dependent factors?
Factors where changes of survival depends on population density
—> food, disease, intra-species
competition
What is the carrying capacity?
Greatest population an area can support indefinitely without damaging the environment
