Specific Stabilising Bandages, Slings And Splints Flashcards
(6 cards)
Robert Jones Bandage
Support bandage
- stabilises injured limbs and improve patient comfort
- minimise edema formation and promoting hemostasis
Primary layer: cover any wound with a soft material (rolled cotton)
Next layer: tightly applied bandage
Last: protective bandage material
Uses: stabilise fractures distal to the stifle or elbow
Contraindicated: in fractures proximal to the stifle or elbow
Modified Robert Jones
Less bulky
Not much protection and stability
Mainly to reduce swelling
Cast padding may be used instead of rolled cotton
Uses: stabilise fractures distal to the stifle or elbow
Contraindicated: in fractures proximal to the stifle or elbow
-can cause a fulcrum at the fracture site and increase tissue damage and pain
Ehmer sling
- Figure eight bandage from the metatarsals to distal femur with bandage all located medial to the tibia
- Primarily to create an internal rotation of hip and stifle in the case of craniodorsal hip luxation
- Contracindicated in a ventral dislocation of the hip
- difficult to place in short legged dogs
- Cats have low tolerance to it
Velpeau sling
- Shoulder bandage that flexes the forelimb up against the body
- Prevents weight bearing
- carpus, elbow and shoulder are all flexed
- Bandage wraps around thorax 2-3 times
- Appropriate with scapular #, dislocation of shoulder, or if need to prevent weight bearing
Schroeder-Thomas sling
- Traction device that requires constant attention and adjustment
- Soft bandages are used as slings to properly position counteract muscle forces to help align and immobilise parts of the skeleton
- Frame is made of Aluminium rods
- Used to mobilize fractures distal to the mid-femur or mid humerus
- Also used to mobilize joints distal to and including the knee and distal to and including the elbow
Spica Splint
- Flat lateral splint that extends from the toe of the injured leg to the dorsal
- Held in place with a supporting bandage that goes up and around the body
- Appropriate for fractures proximal to the elbow or stifle
- Not recommended for injuries distal to these joints
