Q

How does rate differ from unit rate?

A

A rate is a comparison of two quantities of unlike things by division, like miles and gallons.

A unit rate is the cost of one of something.

When written as a fraction, a rate has a denominator of any natural number; a unit rate has a denominator of 1.

Q

What does unit rate mean?

A

It is how much it costs to buy one of something.

For example if a 5-pound roast costs $8.00, the cost of one pound of this roast is $8.00/5 pounds which is $1.60 per 1 pound.

By dividing how much by how many you calculate how much each one unit of the item will cost.

Q

How is a rate converted to a unit rate?

A

By dividing.

To calculate the unit rate for 4 apples that cost $1, divide the price by the number of units there are (how many there are).

$1.00/4apples = $0.25 per apple

Q

Why are unit rates important?

A

Knowing how to calculate unit rate helps you compare prices of different sizes, allowing you to spend your money more wisely.

For example you can decide whether a small box or a large box of cereal gives you the most cereal for the money spent.

A
  1. Calculate the unit rate of both items being compared.
  2. Calculate higher unit rate - lower unit rate.
