Spinal Cord Lesions Flashcards
(7 cards)
Poliomyelitis
Spinal muscular atrophy
flaccid paralysis (LMN)
MS
Due to demyelination
Mostly white matter of cervical region
Scanning speech, intention tremor, nystagmus
ALS
Combined UMN and LMN with no sensory, cognitive, or oculomotor deficits
Complete occlusion of anterior spinal artery
spares dorsal columns
Tabes Dorsalis
Caused by 3o syphilis
Degeneration of the dorsal columns (impaired sensation and proprioception and progressive inability to sense or feel the legs)
Syringomyelia
Syrinx expands and damages the anterior white commissure of spinothalamic tract
Bilateral loss of pain and temperature sensation (C8-T1)
Vitamin B12 deficiency
Subacute combined degeneration—demyelination of dorsal columns, lateral corticospinal tracts, and spinocerebellar tracts
