Spinal Cords & Nerves Flashcards
(30 cards)
The 2 components of the nervous system
- Central Nervous System
- Peripheral Nervous System
CNS includes
Brain, Optical nerve, Spinal cord
PNS includes
All non CNS tissues
Function of nervous system
- Rapid communication system
What is the meninges?
- 3 layers of connective tissues
Where does the Spinal cord come from
- Continuation of the brainstem
- Meninges surrounds the spinal cord
What part is the Conus Medullaris
Caudal Apex of spinal cord at L1/L2
What is Filum terminale?
- Thin ligament extending from conus
medullaris to the coccyx
What does filum terminale do?
Secures the spinal cord inferiorly
What’s the grey matter?
The middle part of the spinal cord
What does dorsal horn do?
Processess sensory information
What does the ventral horn do?
Processess motor commands
What’s the white matter?
Neural axon
The outer part of the spinal cord
What’s neural axon?
A pathway to and from the brain
What’s the central canal?
Middle of the spinal cord
Where does the central canal come from?
The 4th ventricle of the brain
Information encoded in nerve fibres is either transmitted
into the CNS is
Afferent
Information transmitted from CNS to periphery is
Efferent
3 layers that surrounds and protects the spinal cord are
dura matter - tough outer layer
Arachnid matter - Delicate middle layer
Pia matter - firmly achored onto surface of spinal cord
How does spinal nerve exit vertebral canal?
Via intervertebral foramina
What are the 2 types of spinal nerves?
Sensory and motor
How many pairs of spinal nerves are there
31 pairs
What is Cauda equina
A cluster of spinal nerves within the vertebral column
What does posterior (dorsal) nerve roots control?
Sensory
