Trapezius
spinal accessory nerve, C1-C5 cord levels
Latissimus Dorsi
thoracodorsal nerve, ventral rami C6-C8
Levator Scapulae
dorsal scapular nerve, ventral ramus C5 + ventral rami C3, C4
Rhomboid Major
Rhomboid Minor
dorsal scapular nerve, ventral ramus C5 + ventral ramus C4
Splenius Capitis *
dorsal rami C3-C5
Laterally flex head & rotate face to side
Bilaterally extend head
Splenius Cervicis *
dorsal rami C5-C7
Laterally flex & rotate neck;
Bilaterally extend neck
Iliocostalis Lumborum *
dorsal rami lower T, all L
Extension, lateral flexion, rotation of L spine;
Lateral movement of pelvis
Iliocostalis Thoracis *
dorsal rami T1-T6
Extension, lateral flexion T spine
Iliocostalis Cervicis *
dorsal rami T1, T2; rarely C8
Extension, lateral flexion, rotation lower C spine
Longissimus Thoracis *
dorsal rami T & L nerves
Lateral flexion T spine & ribs (L spine inadvertently);
Bilaterally act in extension of T & L spine, hold T & L spine erect (increase L lordosis);
Lateral movement of pelvis
Longissimus Cervicis *
dorsal rami C4-C8; T1-T2
Lateral flexion of neck;
Bilaterally extend neck
Longissimus Capitis *
dorsal rami C1-C3, sometimes C4
Rotate & laterally flex head;
Bilaterally extend head
Spinalis Thoracis *
dorsal rami T & upper L
Extend T spine
Spinalis Cervicis *
dorsal rami C
Lateral flexion & rotation of C spine;
Bilaterally extend neck
Spinalis Capitis *
dorsal rami lower C, upper T
Lateral flexion & rotation of head
Bilaterally extend head
Semispinalis Thoracis *
dorsal rami T1-T6
Extension, rotation & lateral flexion of upper T & lower C spine;
Bilaterally extend T spine
Semispinalis Cervicis *
dorsal rami C6-C8
Extension, rotation & lateral flexion of C spine;
Bilaterally extend neck
Semispinalis Capitis *
dorsal rami C1-C6
Turns face to side;
Bilaterally extends head (neck inadvertently)
Multifidus
dorsal rami C3-C8, T1-T12, L1-L5, sometimes S1
Rectus Capitis Posterior Major *
suboccipital nerve, dorsal ramus C1
Turns face to side;
Bilaterally extends head
Rectus Capitis Posterior Minor *
suboccipital nerve, dorsal ramus C1
Extends head
Obliquus Capitis Superior *
suboccipital nerve, dorsal ramus C1
Lateral flexion of head;
Bilaterally extends head
Obliquus Capitis Inferior *
suboccipital nerve, dorsal ramus C1
Turns face to side
Quadratus Lumborum *
ventral rami T12, L1-L3 or L4
Steadies origin of diaphragm;
When pelvis fixed it will laterally flex the L spine
Bilaterally extends the L spine; stabilizes & depresses the 12th rib
