Spine & ribs Flashcards
(13 cards)
The Cervical region has how many vertebrae, and is labelled how?
7 vertebrae. C1-C7.
Which are the important vertebrae, and what are their names?
C1- Atlas - connects directly with the skull in the occipital condyles
C2- Axis
C7- Vertebra Prominens - base of the Cervical region - bone sticks out low (base of the back of the neck.
The Thoracic region has how many vertebrae, and is labelled how?
12 vertebrae. T1-T12.
The Lumbar region has how many vertebrae, and is labelled how?
5 vertebrae. L1-L5.
What is the Sacral?
The posterior pelvic region. 5 fused vertebrae that form the sacrum.
What is the Coccygeal?
Tailbone region. 4 fused vertebrae that form the coccyx.
List the 5 functions of the Vertebral Column
Protection (of the spinal chord Support ( of the head) Transmits weight Attachment for ribs Attachment for muscles
How many vertebrae muscles make up the spine?
24 movable, 9 fused, 33 total.
How do we identify a vertebrae from each of the 3 regions?
Cervical : small, large triangular hole
Thoracic : looks like a giraffe head, round hole
Lumbar : large, small triangular holes, looks like a moose head
What are the components of the rib cage?
1 sternum (breast bone)
24 ribs
Costal cartilage
What are the 3 components of the sternum?
Manubrium
Body of Sternum
Xiphoid process - Can break off if CPR is done directly on it.
What are the 4 functions of the Thoracic cage?
Protects (heart, lungs, other organs)
Attachment of muscles
Attachments for upper limbs
Breathing
How many ribs are there? and where are they connected?
1st 7 pairs connected directly to the sternum with costal cartilage.
last 3 piggy-back onto each other, and ultimately onto costal cartilage #7. - called false ribs.
pairs 11 + 12 are floating - no sternum attachment at all, or costal cartilage - end in muscle.
