Spirometry Flashcards
(12 cards)
Define Spirometry
Assessing lung function by measuring the volume of air that the patient is able to expel from the lungs after a maximal inspiration
what lung function patterns is it used to differentiate
- Obstructive
- Restrictive
what is FEV1 stand for
Forced Expiratory Vol. in 1 sec
Define FEV1
The volume exhaled in the first sec after deep inspiration and forced expiration
FVC
Forced Vital Capacity
Define Forced Vital Capacity
Total volume of air that a patient can forcibly exhale in one breath
FEV1/FVC
The ratio of FEV1 to FVC
what pattern is FEV1/FVC < 0.7
Obstructive pattern
Reversibility testing in spirometry
SABA - wait 15 mins and repeat spirometry
- 12% reversibility confirms Aathma
Precautions before Spirometry
- Stop SABA 6 hours before testing
- Stop LABA 12 hours before testing
Causes of obstructive lung disease include:
COPD
Asthma
Emphysema
Bronchiectasis
Cystic fibrosis
Pulmonary causes of restrictive lung disease include:
Pulmonary fibrosis
Pneumoconiosis
Pulmonary oedema
Lobectomy/pneumonectomy
Parenchymal lung tumours
