Q

What are endospores?

A

Some bacterial species are able to form endospores through sporulation.
It forms a protective layer to protect the genetic material of the cell
Endospores are formed during harsh environments
They are resilient to harsh conditions hence vegetative cell would not be killed off easily

Q

Why are endospores more resistant than vegetative cells?

A

Endospores have a high content of a specific protein that protects the bacterium’s genetic information
Vegetative cells do not have this specific protein, bacterium’s genetic information is not protected, gets killed off easily

Q

Can endospores undergo cell division?

A

No
Endospores need to undergo germination to form a vegetative cell first, in favourable conditions
Then the vegetative cell will undergo cell division
