What is society
An organised group or people associated for a specific purpose or for a shared common interest
What is socialisation ?
A lifelong process where members of a society learns its norms, values, ideas, practises and roles in order to take their place in that society
What is primary socialisation ?
Primary - This refers to socialisation during the early years of childhood which takes place mainly within immediate family
What is secondary socialisation ?
This occurs in later year e.g. as teenagers and adults when the family is less involved
What is gender socialisation
The act of learning to conform to socially defined gender roles through socialisation
What is social control ?
A way which refers to the way peoples thoughts, feelings and interactions are controlled within society
What is social change ?
An alteration in the order of society
What is social inequality
The unfair situation where resources and opportunities are unevenly distributed
What is social process
The sequence of events within a society can be categorised into social control and change
What are social issues
Problems that effect many people within society

What is social structure ?
Organised patterns of social relationships and institutions that make up society ; class is a common structure in the UK
What is social class ?
A term used to define social inequalities. Certain groups of people have more access to wealth opportunities etc
What is strata of society ?
A group of people in it who are similar in education, income or social status
What is stratification ?
System or ranking in society, e.g. based on wealth power etc
What is social action theory
A way of viewing stratification, emphasising the active roles people have in society
What is the interactionist approach
A study of how people behave in society. It is a theoretical process which stems from social process
What is channelling ?
Ethnic minorities being pushed into certain sports or even certain positions positions within a team based of assumptions made about them
What is stacking ?
The disproportionate concentration of ethnic minorities in certain positions in a sports team, which tends to be based on the stereotype that they’re more valuable for their physicality than their decision making or communication
