20
Q

What is anatomical position?

A

A reference position where person lays supine

21
Q

What is the difference between tendons and ligaments?

A

Tendon connects bone to muscle while ligament connects bone to bone

22
Q

What is a contusion?

A

A bruise when a blow is experienced to the skin which causes a blood vessel to leak under the skin

23
Q

What is a strain?

A

An injury to the tendon which usually is caused by overexertion

Q

What is a sprain?

A

Stretching or tearing of the ligaments in a limb

25
What does PRICE stand for?
Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation
26
What is the difference between the 3 different levels of strains?
1. Slight tear or stretch of muscle fibers 2. Partial tear or stretch 3. Complete tear of muscle fibers
27
What can you do to help prevent muscle strains?
Strengthening muscles, stretching, improving flexibility of muscles
28
What is the difference between chronic and acute injuries?
Acute is a sudden injury while chronic is a long-lasting persistent injury
29
What is HIOPS?
History, Inspection/Observation, Palpate, Special test
30
What is MAPPSS?
Mechanism of injury, Acute or Chronic, Pain, Previous Injury, Sound, Signs and Symptoms
31
Explain what palpation is and why you do it.
Feel for pain, swelling, any deformities and compare it to the uninjured foot
32
List and explain the special tests for knee injuries (ACL and Meniscus).
Lachman's test accesses anterior part of tibia, Anterior drawer test checks stability of ACL, McMurray's test accesses meniscus tears by testing pain and sounds when rotated internally or externally
33
What are the 4 ligaments of the knee?
Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), Medial collateral ligament (MCL), Lateral collateral ligament (LCL)
34
What is the difference between varus and valgus?
Valgus refers to a force that pushes in towards the body, varus means pushing out away from the center of the body
35
What is the mechanism of injury for a LCL tear?
A blow or jolt to the inside of the knee, forcing the knee outward
36
What is the name of the test that checks the PCL?
Posterior drawer test
37
What is a concussion?
When the brain experiences a force or jolt which causes the brain to move rapidly back and forth
38
What are signs and symptoms of a concussion?
Headaches, dizziness, nausea, confusion, hard time breathing
39
What is SIS?
Second impact syndrome is when athletes suffer another head injury after recovering from another one that can lead to many more brain disabilities and injuries
40
When can you be cleared to return to activity after a diagnosed concussion?
After constant surveillance and talks with school athletic trainer and symptoms are gone
41
What are common hand and wrist injuries?
Sprains, strains, fractures, and tendonitis
42
What are the 3 bone groups of the hand?
Carpals, metacarpals, phalanges
43
What is tennis elbow? How is it treated/diagnosed?
Inflammation of the tendons in the forearm muscles, treated with RICE, diagnosed with Cozen's test and X-rays
44
What is Little League elbow? How is it treated/diagnosed?
Growth plate on inner side of elbow medial epicondyle is inflamed from overuse, treated with RICE and diagnosed with examination
45
What is game keepers thumb? How is it treated/diagnosed?
A sprain or tear of ulnar collateral ligament at base of thumb treated with splinting, sometimes surgery diagnosed with physical examination and checking for swelling and pain
