Q

what limits the oxidation of exogenous glucose

A

gastric emptying
-this is the rate at which gastric fluids are passed to the intestine

Q

how does exercise influence gastric emptying

A

high intensity exercise has shown to delay gastric emptying

Q

how does more glucose consumption influence gastric emptying

A

the more glucose you consume; the slower your gastric emptying becomes

Q

what is the difference between CHO ingestion and CHO infusion

A

-infusion via the blood stream means it reaches your blood much quicker and so it is going to be oxidised much quicker during exercise than ingested CHO

Q

what is the affect of glucose ingestion on glucose appearance

A

RA= glucose appearance is the rate at which glucose appears in the blood
-so if we look at Ra over time- Ra is only going to increase after about an hour of exercise because the first hour is used to digest an absorb the glucose before it can enter the blood stream

Q

relationship between pre exercise muscle glycogen and exercise performance

A

the more muscle glycogen you have present before exercise; the greater your endurance is going to be ie; carbo loading

Q

effect of CHO loading on performance vs non loaded group

A
  • both groups run a race at the same pace and for the first hour will use their glycogen stores at the same rate
-but then after the first hour we see a decline in the rate of glycogen usage in the non loaded group ie; they need to preserve their smaller stores to try complete the same distance
-this means they will have to slow their pace
-the loaded group will have a greater rate of glycogen usage because they have more of it and so will be able to run at a greater pace and thus; will finish the race first
-if the non loaded group dont slow their pace then they will fatigue and wont be able to finish the distance
