What is a motor skill
A coordinated pattern of movement acquired through practice towards the intended outcome
What is skilful movements
One in which a predetermined objective is accomplished with maximum efficiency with a minimum outlay of energy
Characteristics of a skilful movement
Coordinated officiant predetermined fluid and aesthetic
Efficiency
Performer can complete the skill without wasting energy skilled movements are efficient
Eg hitting a cricket ball
Predetermined
Your full movements are predetermined this means the performer will practice the skill with an aim in mind
Eg gymnast
Coordinated
Full movements are coordinated this means the performer displays excellent coordination and control in the timings of the skill
Fluent
Perform the skill so it flows rugby players picking up the ball and passing influence movement
Aesthetic
Performa makes the school look good dancers performing a pirouette in a routine
Classification of skills
Skills can be placed on a sliding scale: continue with a continuum is a visual guide to show whether skill fits into a specific category
The difficulty continuum
Simple-complex
Simple skills
Straight forward basic skill
No decision making
Can be taught at a whole skill
Eg hand stand
Complex skill
Involves decision-making
may have to be learning stages
e.g. where you can basketball
The environmental continuum
Open-closed
Open skill
Affected by the environment performer has to make decisions about the situation
e.g. passing in football
Closed skills
Still is not affected by the environment
less decision-making because it predictable
performer can take their time to execute
e.g. golf swing
Types of guidance in sport
Visual
verbal

mechanical
Verbal guidance
Used with visual to talk through skill advantage given quickly disadvantage can be boring and too much to take in
Visual guidance
When teaching a motor skill is so fun can see the whole action advantage good for beginners disadvantage must be executed so can be learned correctly
Manual guidance
is a hands on approach to help the performer stay safe
advantage builds confidence disadvantage performer is depending on support
Mechanical guidance
Using equipment to support the learner
advantage builds confidence and insures safety
disadvantage and opportunities to correct mistakes
Mental preparation
Imagery

Creation of pictures in your mind and improve concentration and stop the performance becoming anxious
Metal rehearsal
Involves until now and external imagery picture yourself on the outside of your body like watching yourself on the phone race car drivers may go through the routine in their mind first
