ATTITUDES
Are ideas charged with emotions (positive or negative) which predisposes a class of actions to a particular social situation.
ATTITUDES ARE FORMED THROUGH:
1) experiences - either pleasant or unpleasant
2) attitudes of the people around us
COMPONENTS OF ATTITUDE
Cognitive
Affective
Behavioural
COGNITIVE
Knowledge and beliefs are formed through past experiences and what we have learned from others
AFFECTIVE
Feelings and emotions, depend on past experiences such as satisfaction, enjoyment, fear etc.
BEHAVIOURAL
Intended behaviour (action related)
THE TRIADIC MODEL
The relationship between the three components:
Cognitive,
Affective,
Behavioural,
CHANGING ATTITUDE COGNITIVE
Updating knowledge or providing a person with new information can change the cognitive component
CHANGING ATTITUDE AFFECTIVE
Providing a person with new and positive experiences can modify the affective component
CHANGING ATTITUDES BEHAVIOURAL
Success and reinforcement. If a skill is simplified or if some form of guidance is used to make execution easier, the behavioural component of attitude can be changed
COGNITIVE DISSONANCE
The uncomfortable feeling of an athlete experiences when their actions, beliefs, or attitudes conflict with each other
STRESS
The stimulus resulting in a positive or negative response to a specific situation
EUSTRESS
Positive and gives a feeling of fulfilment and arousal. It can increase focus, attention and skill level. Some athletes actively seek and need stressful situations.
DISTRESS
Negative form of stress and in extreme cases causes anxiety and apprehension. It tends to be detrimental to sporting performance
