What are the four basic types of tissues?
Muscular, Epithelial, Connective, Nervous
What is the primary function of epithelial tissues?
Covers body surfaces, lines hollow organs, and forms glands
What are the surfaces of the epithelial tissues?
- Apical (free) surface
- Lateral surfaces
- Basal surface
What does the apical surface of epithelial tissue face?
Body surface, lumen, and body cavity
What are the two types of epithelium?
- Covering and lining epithelium
- Glandular epithelium
How is covering and lining epithelium classified?
- Arrangement of layers: simple, stratified, pseudostratified
- Cell shape: squamous, columnar, cuboidal
What is an example of a simple epithelial arrangement?
Simple squamous epithelium
What is the role of glandular epithelium?
Secreting portion of glands
What are glands composed of?
Cells or groups of cells that secrete substances
What are endocrine glands?
Glands that secrete into interstitial fluid and diffuse directly into the bloodstream
What are exocrine glands?
Glands that secrete products into ducts that empty onto the surface of covering and lining epithelium
What are the structural classifications of exocrine glands?
- Unicellular glands
- Multicellular glands (branched or unbranched)
What is an epithelial membrane?
A combination of an epithelial layer and underlying connective tissue layer
What are examples of epithelial membranes?
- Mucous membranes
- Serous membranes
- Cutaneous membranes
What is the synovial membrane?
Lines joints and contains connective tissue but no epithelial tissue
What is the function of synoviocytes in the synovial membrane?
Secrete synovial fluid which lubricates the joint
What is connective tissue?
Most abundant and widely distributed tissues in the body
What is collagen?
The main protein of connective tissue
What are the main components of connective tissues?
- Sparse cells
- Extracellular matrix (ECM)
What types of cells are found in connective tissues?
- Fibroblasts
- Chondrocytes
- Osteocytes
- White blood cells
- Adipocytes
What is the extracellular matrix (ECM)?
A non-cellular material located between and around cells
What are the types of protein fibers in connective tissues?
- Collagen
- Elastin
- Reticular fibers
What are loose connective tissues?
- Areolar connective tissue
- Adipose tissue
- Reticular connective tissue
What distinguishes dense connective tissues?
Contain numerous thicker and denser fibers
