Stages Of Sleep Flashcards
(31 cards)
Usually lasts an average of 10 minutes
Stage 1 sleep
Called a light sleep or “half awake half asleep” stage
Stage 1 sleep
Person my show a hypnotic jerk- reflex muscle contraction throughout the body
Stage 1 sleep
EEG pattern- marked by presence of theta waves, which are lower in amplitude and frequency than alpha waves
Stage 1 sleep
Fairly easy to awaken person in this stage
Stage 1 sleep
People who are awakened from this stage report that they were awake
Stage 1 sleep
Considered the onset of true sleep
Stage 2 sleep
This stage averages 20 minutes
Stage 2 sleep
Someone awakened from this stage reports being asleep
Stage 2 sleep
EEG pattern- high frequency bursts of brain activity called sleep spindles
Stage 2 sleep
Near the end of this stage delta waves begin to show
Stage 2 sleep
The persons muscle tension, heart rate, respiration, and temperature begin to decline
Stage 2 sleep
Persons eyes move slowly side to side
Stage 2 sleep
Transition stage from wakefulness to sleep
Stage 1 sleep
The persons muscle tension, heart rate, restriction, and temperature continue to decline
Stage 3 sleep
EEG pattern- delta waves start to show more
Stage 3 sleep
These stages are sometimes called slow wave sleep
Stages 3 and 4
EEG pattern- high amplitude and very low frequency (delta waves)
Stage 4 sleep
Delta waves must be at least 50% of the EEG pattern, will eventually constitute 100% of pattern
Stage 4 sleep
Considered the deepest stage of sleep- most difficult to wake someone
Stage 4 sleep
Sleep walking and sleep talking occur in this stage
Stage 4 sleep
Children with night terrors have them in this stage
Stage 4 sleep
Most people who do get up at this time don’t remember the experience or getting up
Stage 4 sleep
Makes up approximately 20% of a persons sleep time
REM sleep
