What are the similarities between the boar and stallion reproductive systems?
Epididymis Ductus Deferens Scrotum Inguinal Canal Prostate Gland
What is the function of the epidiymis?
Stores sperm before ejaculation. Sperm matures here for 10-15 days.
What is the function of the ductus deferens?
Muscular tubes which undergo peristaltic contractions during ejaculations to propel the sperm from the epididymis to the urethra.
What is the function of the scrotum?
Protective sac for the testes. Can control temperature of the testes by using the cremastor and dartos muscles to raise and lower the testes.
What is the function of the inguinal canal?
Allows passage of the testes and associated blood vessels and nerves.
What are the differences between the boar and the stallion reproductive systems?
Testes - Boar testes are said to be perineal because ethey are ventral to the anus. Stallion testes are held close to the abdominal wall and the long axis of each testis is horizontal.
Accessory Glands - Boar ampullae are not present while the stallion ampullae are well developed. The boars vesicular gland is lobulated and large while the stallions is pear shaped and hollow. Boars have very large bulbourethral glands.
Penis - The boar has a fibroelastic penis so remains firm when not erect while the stallion has a musculocavernous penis so is flacid when not erect.
Glans Penis - The boar has a small twisted glans while the stallion has a large glans and a urethral process.
Prepuce - The boar has pouch dorsal to preputial orifice which collects urine, secretions and dead cells and makes distinctive smell. The stallion has a double folded prepuce so 2 layers while penis is retracted.
What is the purpose of accessory glands?
Produce bulk of ejaculate in the form of fluid secretions. Nourishes sperm and buffer against acidity of vagina.
