Staph Flashcards
(15 cards)
what disease is characterized by formation of localized perioral erythema
Staphylococcal Scaled Skin Syndrome
what is meant by desquamation of skin around the mouth and what disease is this seen in
shedding of skin around the mouth and this is seen in SSSS(staphylococcal Scaled Skin syndrome)
what are some characteristics seen in Staphylococcal Scaled Skin syndrome
Desquamation of skin around the mouth
Bilsters full of clear fluid
formation of localized periroral erythema
what causes SSSS
S.aureus
what are some characteristics of Bullous impetigo
Localized blisters containing culture (pustules)
characteristics of impetigo
Young demographic
face and limbs are targeted
Macule development into a pustule
redned skin due to congestion of pilli
what are the charateristics of folliculitis
around hair follicles
folicle base is raised and red puss collects beneath the surface
pus is present
what disease is referred to as boils and what are some characteristics
Furuncles
progression of folliculitis
large painful nodules due to blockage of sweat gland
what type of infection results from the combination of furuncles
Carbuncles
these extend deeper into the host tissue
may reslut in bactermia (infected blood)
chills and a fever
what is the cause of prosthetic infections
staph epidermidis
why are these staph infections which target the skin associated with extremities and surface of the skin?
because these organisms are very sensitive to heat
what type of antibiotic should be used to treat a staph infection
Vancomycin
what are the causes for staph diseases
toxin production and direct invasion and destruction of the host tissue
what are some virulence factors of staph
capsule–> contains a polyscacharide layer which aids in evasion of phagocytosis
Endotoxin activity
Protein A- located on the capsule surface which prevents antigen binding
Teichoic acid- aids in attachment to mucosal surfaces
Clumping- coagulase causes aggregation
MSCRAMMs- Microbial surface components` recognizing adhesive matrix molecules (pretty much jus aids in attachment to host proteins)
