Startford Regeneration (human) Flashcards
(20 cards)
Was the investigation specific?
Only looking at social and environmental impacts makes investigation specific and focused.
Was the investigation measurable?
Specialist equipment wasn’t needed, easy to carry out + data is accurate.
Was the investigation achievable?
Chosen two sites that are close together, data can be collected in one day. Two data collection techniques allow for enough data for reliable conclusion.
Was the investigation relevant?
Looking at social opportunities we can gauge success of project.
Was the investigation timely?
Keeping to 2 sites, walkable. Sample size was enough but not too much to not be completed in 2h.
What primary data was used?
Environmental quality survey and questionnaire.
What types of data did we use?
Quantitative data (the environment scores) and qualitative.
What sampling method was used for the environmental quality survey?
Systematic sampling, every 5th sub area.
What sampling method was used for the questionnaire?
Systematic, the first person seen. Biased, students only went up to approachable people.
Justification of using new town and east village?
By conducting survey in non-regenerated and regenerated area, we can assess whether regeneration has improved the environmental quality. Creates quantitative data where average can be calculated.
Justification of taking a picture of both areas?
Qualitative data to vary it, make conclusion more reliable. Visual representation to support data, to explain any possible anomalies.
Justification of questionnaire?
Allow us to gauge if regeneration improved area for locals.
What were the risks and how were they managed?
Busy roads/traffic accidents - we only used pedestrian crossings.
What were the benefits of using a pie chart?
Easy to compare the different components.
What are the limitations of pie charts?
Can only use for a small number of categories, too many segments becomes difficult to interpret and see.
Benefits of using a chloropleth map for environmental survey?
Shows a large amount of data, clear visual impression of changes over space/trend.
What are the limitations of a chloropleth map?
May over exaggerate differences as boundaries are abrupt, hard to distinguish between shades, variations within boundary not seen.
Benefits of using a photograph for the 2 areas?
Can represent things clearly unlike numeric data.
What are the negatives of using photographs?
Time of day matters, e.g. before rubbish collections.
What types of data did we collect?
Only discrete data.
