States of Matter Flashcards
(23 cards)
What are the three states of matter/
liquids, solids and gases
What are solids?
materials with a definite shape and volume
they cannot be compressed because the particules are very close in a regular arrangement
Why are the particles in a solid close?
Because they have a a strong attraction for each other called Intermolecular Forces (IMF)
What are liquids?
materials with the ability to take the shape of the container but have a fixed volume
particles are slightly further apart but still cannot be compressed
What is translational motion?
particles vibrate but can also slide past each other (liquids)
What are gases?
materials that take the shape and volume of the containers
particles are far apart and very compressible
in constant random motion
Each matter with their type of energy
Solids - vibrational
Liquids - vibrational, translational
Gases - vibrational, translational, rotational
What is it called when one state of a matter changes into another?
phase changes
Are phase changes physical or chemical changes?
physical changes bc material stays chemically the same
Solid ➡ Liquid
Melting
Liquid ➡ Gas
Vaporization/ Boiling
Gas ➡ Solid
Deposition
Solid ➡ Gas
Sublimation
Gas ➡ Liquid
Condensation
Liquid ➡Solid
Freezing/ Fusion
How do we measur ethe average kinetic energy of particles in a substance?
Through temperature
What is the kinetic energy of particles?
The energy the particles have due to their motion
As we go Solid ➡ Liquid ➡ Gas what increases?
Interparticle Distance
Potential Energy
Kinetic Energy
Temperature
What is another way to change the state of matter?
add or remove pressure
If a substance fills the container it is in completely and takes the shape of the container, what state of matter is the substance?
Gas
What is the name of the phase change from a gas to solid?
Deposition
If the substance has its own volume but takes the shape of the container, what state of matter is it?
Liquid
What type of matter only has vibrational kinetic energy?
Solid
