States Of Matter Flashcards
(14 cards)
Mass
Is the amount of matter in an object
Matter
Anything that occupies space and has mass
Diffusion
Diffusion is the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration eg spray perfume in one corner of the room , it spreads to the rest of the room
Particles in a solid
definite shape
Definite volume
Cannot be compressed
Cannot flow
Particles in a liquid
No definite shape
definite volume
Cannot be compressed
Can flow
Particles in a gas
No definite shape
No definite volume
Can be compressed
Can flow
Energy
In order for a substance to change state ( from solid to a liquid or liquid to gas ) it needs heat energy
Melting point
The melting point is when both solid and liquid state exist together ( changing from a solid to a liquid )
Boiling point
The boiling point is when evaporation begins to happen throughout the liquid ( changing from liquid to a gas )
Condensation
Condensation Is the changing of a gas to a liquid
Chromatography
Used to separate a mixture of dissolved substances in a solution . E.g. the different colours in a black marker
Fig 19.13 and 19.14 pg 167
Radiation can
A dull black surface radiates and absorbs heat better than a shiny silver surface
Low pressure
Lowers the boiling point
High pressure
Raises the boiling point
